Modern Wedding Vows

Modern Wedding Vows

Today western marriages are predominantly born out of love rather than political or hierarchical motivations. Legally they are institutions of state as opposed to religion. In Australia couples are free to draft their own wedding vows provided they comply with the S46 of the Marriage Act. This stipulates that couples must fulfill three basic requirements in order for their vows to be valid. They must:

  1. Use their full names; and
  2. Use the terms husband and wife; and
  3. Declare their intention to take the other party as their husband/wife.

Outside of this a couple is free to write their vows however they wish. In the event that you wish to have a religious ceremony additional requirements associated with your chosen faith may also need to be adhered to.
